E-FAST India (Electric Freight Accelerator for Sustainable Transport – India) is an initiative by NITI Aayog, and WRI India launched in 2022 to unite government stakeholders and private sector partners towards supporting the electrification of freight on an industrial scale.
Why Is Freight Electrification Crucial?
Freight transportation is one of India’s primary sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Road freight vehicles account for nearly 45% of emissions on Indian roads; electrifying freight vehicles could help lower these emissions and improve air quality.
The e-FAST platform prioritizes three core areas:
- Technology and Innovation: This platform monitors developments in freight electric technologies and private sector innovation. Furthermore, it facilitates the creation of new technologies and business models which accelerate freight electrification adoption.
- Market Acceleration: The platform creates strategies that address barriers to adoption, incentivize manufacturing and provide avenues for experimentation and deployment of freight electric vehicles among fleet owners and shippers.
- Public Policy Support: This platform assists decision-makers by identifying appropriate incentive structures, public investments and resources to stimulate demand and industry innovation. Furthermore, it raises awareness among policymakers and the general public of the benefits of freight electrification.
NITI Aayog and WRI Join Force to Launch e-FAST India Initiative and Accelerate Freight Electrification
NITI Aayog and World Resources Institute India jointly unveiled e-FAST India, an innovative platform designed to accelerate freight electrification in India. The platform convenes key players across the freight ecosystem – policymakers, industry leaders, and financial institutions – to strengthen partnerships, find innovative freight electrification solutions and spread awareness of its benefits.
Electric freight transportation needs to be electrified immediately, according to experts.
Freight transportation is one of India’s primary contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 14% of its total greenhouse gas emissions in 2020. As India’s economy develops further, freight demand will likely increase significantly; coupled with efforts to lower emissions, this growth makes freight electrification an urgent priority.

At this event, three key initiatives were undertaken. A report entitled “Transforming Trucking in India – Pathways to Zero-Emission Truck Deployment” will be unveiled, along with an electric freight electrification roadmap and network of champions for freight electrification in India. All parties present will discuss the benefits associated with freight electrification.

Fast Track Indian Freight Electrification
India is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, with the transportation sector being one of the main contributors. Freight transportation accounts for 14% of India’s greenhouse gas emissions, with road freight responsible for most emissions.
Electric trucks offer one of the best ways to decarbonize freight transportation. Their lower emissions than their diesel counterparts help improve air quality in cities while simultaneously helping the planet. Yet there are some obstacles left that need to be overcome before electric trucks become mainstream in India.
One challenge associated with electric trucks in India is the limited infrastructure. India’s electric grid is still underdeveloped, and not enough charging stations exist for electric trucks – making it hard for businesses to utilize them without experiencing range anxiety.
Electric trucks cost more than diesel, making them less desirable business options. But this should change over time as technology matures and production expands.
Despite these obstacles, freight electrification in India is growing in momentum. The government offers incentives for purchasing electric trucks while numerous companies work on creating and manufacturing them specifically for India’s market.
Enabling Dialogue and Co-Creation
One key step towards speeding freight electrification in India is encouraging dialogue and co-creation amongst all stakeholders. This includes policymakers, manufacturers, logistics companies, financiers and customer industry representatives.
Work together; these stakeholders can identify and address obstacles that prevent the widespread adoption of electric trucks while creating and implementing policies and regulations to foster the growth of the electric truck market.
India’s Climate Goals Need Supporting
Freight electrification is integral to India’s plan to reduce carbon emissions. By electrifying freight transportation, India can improve air quality while decreasing fossil fuel reliance while creating new jobs in the renewable energy sector.
The government has already taken several steps to promote freight electrification. The 2022 National Logistics Policy includes provisions promoting electric trucks’ use. Furthermore, incentives have been offered to encourage their purchase.
Freight electrification offers India an effective path toward decarbonizing transportation and improving air quality. By encouraging dialogue, co-creation, and market development for electric truck fleets, India can accelerate its transition towards electric freight trucks to reach its climate goals more quickly.
Decarbonizing India’s Road Freight: Steps Towards a Greener and Cleaner Future
India faces an enormous challenge: decarbonizing its road freight sector, which accounts for much of its greenhouse gas emissions. There has been growing interest in electric vehicles (EVs) as potential solutions; however, several issues must be overcome before these vehicles can become mainstream for commercial freight transportation in India.
One of the major barriers to the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) for businesses is cost. At present, they tend to be more expensive than their diesel counterparts, making them less attractive options for companies. But as technology matures and economies of scale become realized, costs should decrease over time.
Another obstacle is the availability of charging infrastructure. For electric vehicles (EVs) to become viable options for commercial freight transportation, a network of charging stations along major freight corridors must exist. India is working towards solving this challenge by subsidizing the installation of charging stations.
Though electric vehicles (EVs) face challenges in India’s road freight sector, there are several reasons for optimism in their future. The government is committed to decarbonizing its economy through electric vehicles (EVs). Furthermore, businesses increasingly demand sustainable transportation options for business use.
As electric vehicle (EV) prices drop and charging infrastructure improves, more EVs will likely be utilized for commercial freight transportation in India – helping to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and enhance air quality.
Here are the highlights from this study:
- India is well positioned to lead the charge toward the electrification of commercial vehicles due to its rapidly evolving domestic ecosystem and substantial freight corridors. Policy support must be secured for an expeditious transition to electric freight vehicles.
- Various challenges are associated with electric freight vehicle adoption, including costs, charging infrastructure availability and use cases that demonstrate their viability in India.
- Although electric vehicles (EVs) face significant obstacles in India’s road freight sector, there are reasons to remain optimistic about their future.
The study makes the following recommendations.
- The government should provide policies and regulatory support to accelerate the transition towards electric freight vehicles, with efforts focused on lowering the costs of EVs while encouraging charging infrastructure development.
- Businesses should explore using electric freight vehicles (EVs) for commercial freight transportation. Research institutes must conduct further investigations on the viability of electric freight vehicles under Indian conditions.
India faces an enormously complex challenge in electrifying its road freight sector. However, doing so is crucial for meeting its climate goals and positioning itself as a global leader in sustainable transportation solutions. By meeting these challenges head-on, this study hopes that India can emerge as one of the leaders of change towards sustainable transportation systems.
By convening multiple stakeholders to share knowledge, develop strategies, and tackle challenges together, e-FAST has already made great strides toward shaping its future as a key enabler of freight electrification in India.
