Tesla’s Gigafactory Expansion in Water-scarce Germany Faces New Hurdles
This Giga factory, located near Berlin in northeastern Germany, has been widely recognized as an essential catalyst in speeding the transition to electric vehicles and improving economic development in its region. However, some environmental groups have raised objections relating to water usage by the plant.
Recent droughts in the region have increased concerns among environmental agencies regarding any expansion of Gigafactories; environmental agencies have expressed fears about the strain being placed on local water resources by expanding gigafactories and the impact on local groundwater tables from these facilities.
Tesla has stated its commitment to water efficiency by decreasing plant usage; however, environmental agencies need more, and the company should make further adjustments.
Tesla has already encountered delays in getting its gigafactory up and running; initially scheduled for completion by 2021, production has been held back due to a lack of approvals and protests from environmental groups.
Tesla may experience further delays concerning expanding their plant, and it remains to be seen when production at total capacity will commence.
Tesla issued a statement declaring its commitment to working closely with environmental agencies to find an acceptable solution that meets both its factory needs and those of local communities.
The company expressed confidence in expanding the factory while protecting the environment.
Tesla may take this setback hard, but this doesn’t mark an end to their plans in Germany. Their gigafactory remains vital to their strategy of expanding the production of electric vehicles there.
As it expands operations there, Tesla must address the environmental concerns raised by Germany’s ecological agency. Otherwise, additional scrutiny may arise as its operations expand further.
